Ferocious

I bought some markers the other day. I'd never ever worked with them before so I bought just a select few and decided this weeks Illustration Friday prompt would be the ideal occasion to try them out. Conclusion: I like markers, they're fun new playthings BUT I seriously need to buy me some appropriate paper! The paper I did this on was not quite resistent and started to crease and then do all sorts of fugly things and so the drawing did not exactly turn out the way I wanted it too.

Since "ferocious" brings seventies-type girls with huge afro-hair to mind for me, I decided to stick with the theme and went on to heavily photoshop this piece in an attempt to make it 'groovy' again. All in all not an overwhelming succes, this one, but I'm not displeased with it either. They can't all be winners, right? ;)

Suggestions for kinds of paper that work really well with markers are more than welcome!

  1. I think it is a quite beautiful drawing, and you did an excellent job for your first time using markers! I guess the kind of paper you would use depends upon the type of marker you are using. ?? I use prisma markers and just regular printer paper. Prisma markers blend a lot like watercolor does. The key is to let each layer dry before applying the next layer (just like layering watercolor.) ;)

  2. A regular copy paper with a good brightness is good for markers, and cheap too.

I like this. The blue and orange. One of my favorite things to do is mix intense blues and oranges so I find myself sympatico with your rendering sensibilities.

    She does look ferocious!

  4. Thanks! :) I used water-based markers. Since I'd never used them before I bought about five of the cheap ones to familiarize myself but I've heard and seen amazing things about Copics and they're definately on my wish list! thank you for the paper recommendations as well everyone, will give it a try next time!
